West Bend’s Critical Mass bike rides are starting again!

Please meet us at the West Bend Public Library at 11am on Saturday mornings, where we will start our ride.

The goals of this weekly ride are to raise awareness for bicycle rights, to show a large presence of bicyclists, to encourage others to choose bicycling as a basic mode of transportation, and to have a fun ride!

The Critical Mass ride is  slow-paced and family-friendly, so all are invited and encouraged to ride with us.

See you there!

Three upcoming events in West Bend:

Bake Sale/Cook-out for Microcosm Fundraiser.

Saturday, July 10th. 10:30 a.m.

Riverside Park. West Bend, WI.

There will be a big bake sale held to help the folks who are bringing Microcosm Publishing to town raise some cash. Please come out and buy some yummy pastries and support this upcoming event! Also, if you’d like to help out, you could bake something and bring it to the park for us to sell.

Really Really Free Market.

Saturday, July 17th. 11 a.m.

Riverside Park. West Bend, WI.

West Bend’s first Really Really Free Market takes place this July! The ‘Free Market is a day of free rummaging. The idea is that folks will bring things to give and find things to take. This event is meant to be leaderless and relatively organization-free. It’s just a bunch of people in a park enjoying themselves and participating in a gift economy. You’ll find more than just “stuff” at the Really Really Free Market. Expect food, festivities, and workshops as well. Hope to see you there.

Crosstown Alleycat Bike Ride

Sunday, July 18th. Registration at 11 a.m. Ride starts at 11:30 a.m.

Regner Park. West Bend, WI.

There will be a crosstown alleycat this month for those who enjoy riding their bicycles (and riding at fast speeds). This will be a “rapid, self-guided” tour of the West Bend area. Those who make it through the checkpoints and back to the park first will receive prizes. After the ride there will be a vegetarian potluck and open forum at Regner Park. Come prepared to ride!

On Saturday, May 29th we will be having a rummage sale in West Bend, WI to raise money for a future collective space/infoshop that will open here in town.

The Rummage sale will be located on Cabrini Circle off of 7th Ave.  It’s a short little cul-de-sac off of the main road. The sale starts at 8am and will  go on all day.

Candlelight Distro will be tabling at the sale and we’ll be having a big sale on a bunch of miscellaneous books, cd’s, and patches.

If you have anything you would like to donate items for the sale, please contact us at: candlelight-distro@riseup.net. Any donations will be extremely helpful and appreciated. We’d also love for you to stop by the sale and say hi.

Now, about the collective: right now it’s in the process of transitioning from a daydream to a reality. We’ve talked about it a good deal and i think we have a general idea of what we’d like from it. Just recently, we’ve acquired a space and started cleaning it out. The next step is setting it up. To do that we’ll need to obtain lots of different things from friends or maybe thrift stores, if we have to (bookshelves, tables, furniture, books and zines for the lending library, etc.) We need help from the community to make this thing happen. Our plans for the space have been inspired a good deal by the Cream City Collectives out of Milwaukee, WI. Check out their website by clicking on the link over in that column to the right. This means that we want to have free literature, a library, screenprinting and other workshop areas, hangout and event space, etc. If this interests you, let us know and we’ll help you get involved!

Anyways, hope to see you all at the rummage sale!

Environmental activist and author Derrick Jensen will be doing a q&a session with the public via skype-video on May 25, 2010. This event will be held at the University of Wisconsin – Washington County in Room 276 (by the library). It will start at 6pm and go for about two hours. The organizers of this event will be asking for $5-10 dollars donation at the door as this is costing them a good amount of money and they have only made about half of it back so far. Please don’t let that stop you from coming, though. We’re simply trying to fill seats at this point, so if you can’t pay that much you’ll still be let in.

As far as asking Derrick questions goes, many of the organizers have first dibs on asking. This means that they will go first and others will have a chance after them. Please understand that Derrick tends to go pretty deep into the questions asked so it’s possible that time could run out before you have a chance to ask yours. We hope that doesn’t stop you from coming and listening in, anyways.

Thanks to everyone for helping us make this happen and thanks to Derrick for agreeing to do this with us.

See you soon,

R.E.C.A.L.L.

May 20th- Discussion group at Grasshopper Restaurant. Time will be used to  share, refine, and decide on the questions we’re planning on asking Derrick Jensen during the Video Conference (see May 25th) by asking our questions to each other and going through a couple of his books. 5:30 pm. We are hoping this meeting will aid individuals in deciding on a good question to ask Jensen during our Q&A with him.

May 25th- Derrick Jensen Q&A video conference! Derrick Jensen will be “skype-ing” with us and people will have the chance to have their question(s) answered by him. The conference will be held at the University of Wisconsin Washington County on 400 South University Drive. in West Bend. Starts at 6pm and goes till 8pm. Donations highly suggested (it costs $200 in all to do this talk). Please bring a good question to ask of him. If you are unfamiliar with Derrick’s work see: derrickjensen.org or endciv.com.
